Shared Terrace Etiquette: Unwritten Rules for Apartment Residents

A shared terrace is technically common space, but how people use it decides whether it feels pleasant or problematic.

Basic cleanliness is the first courtesy. If you exercise, host a small gathering or dry clothes, make sure you don’t leave trash, bottles, food or plastic behind. Others also use the space, and nobody wants to step into someone else’s mess.

Noise is another big one. Early morning workouts with loud music or late-night chats in big groups can disturb top-floor residents. Use the terrace like you’d want your neighbour to use it.

Respect boundaries. Don’t peek into other people’s balconies or windows from the terrace. It makes residents feel watched in their own homes.

If you move furniture, water plants or do any activity that might cause drips, check that it’s not spilling onto lower balconies.

And finally, follow society rules about timings and allowed activities. Shared spaces work best when everyone remembers they’re… shared.
